Exxon New York State Road Map
When the General Drafting Company of New Jersey was sick of other map makers stealing their work, they decided to create the fictional town of Agloe, New York and insert it near Roscoe in the Catskills Region. Later, when Rand McNally indeed copied their map, General Drafting took them to court. Much to everyone’s surprise, a local couple had seen “Agloe” on a map near their home and opened the Agloe General Store, assuming it was a legitimate town. The judge ruled that since a store existed with that name, there was no way it could’ve been made up. For more, you can read the whole story on Exploring Upstate here.
Agloe has since been removed from modern maps, but the paper town still exists on this vintage New York State road map published by Exxon. (Unknown publish date)
The overall condition of the map is good, but there are some tears and some yellowing. Slight mildew smell is present.
