1850 Ross Barnes, first person to hit a recorded home run in Major League Baseball, is born in Mt. Morris, New York, Livingston County.

1879 George Selden, attorney and inventor in Rochester, files a patent for a revised version of a two-stage engine that he invented to power an automobile. George Eastman, then aged 24, serves as his witness for the patent application.

1974 About an hour after a Penn Central train crosses The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge (now, Walkway Over the Hudson), smoke is discovered billowing from the wooden ties. The bridge caught fire, believed to be started by a spark from a train's brake system.

2017 Chris Bostick of Gates, New York makes his Major League Baseball debut when he is signed to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
