1657 Jews in New Amsterdam (now, New York City) are granted religious freedom

1825 The town of Hastings, New York is broken off from Constantia. At first, the town was called "Breda" by patent holder George Scriba. He chose the named Breda from a town and fortress in the province of North Brabant, Netherlands, twenty-six miles southeast of Rotterdam, his native place. Later, one of the primary settlers here, Hastings Curtiss, would be the town's namesake.

1829 The Town of Walworth in Wayne County is established by being separated from the Town of Ontario.

1918 Highly decorated Navy officer and best selling author Edward L. "Ned" Beach, Jr. is born in New York City

1919 Race car driver Phil Walters is born in New York City. He was a two-time winner of both the Watkins Glen Grand Prix and the 12 Hours of Sebring.

2002 At approximately 6:50a, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurs in the western part of Peru, New York. The quake is felt as far away as Cleveland and Baltimore.
