Exploring The Chautauqua Allegany Region
The Chautauqua Allegany Region includes a few counties at the southwestern edge of New York State. They’re also sometimes included in the Western New York designation, and sometimes known as the Southern Tier. They are even part of the Twin Tiers–a region that includes the northern bordering counties of Pennsylvania.
Regardless of what you call this region, there’s no denying its majesty.
This region of New York is home to the Enchanted Mountains, so there is plenty of skiing, fishing, and outdoor activities. You can walk through the world’s largest exposure of quartz conglomerate in Olean, or visit the home of Lucille Ball in Jamestown. Spend a weekend exploring one of the oldest summer resorts dedicated to education at the Chautauqua Institution, or visit an entire town of spiritual mediums in Lily Dale.
You’ll discover fantastic local breweries and wineries, and can get some of the best cheese curd you’ve ever had in Cuba. You can even walk into a hardware store and order up BBQ in Friendship. Maple syrup farms like Sprague’s offer fun tours and a great menu of local products.
There’s history to learn and museums to visit. There’s Main Streets to walk, and lakes to swim. Plenty of festivals celebrate art, food, and music. There’s outdoor sports to be enjoyed year round. No matter what your interests, they’ll be covered somewhere in this region.
These towns are easily accessible via the Southern Tier Expressway, so getting here is simple. Whether you’re looking for a quick day trip to explore nature or a longer getaway to escape city life, you’ll be sure to find it here.
